Artist Statement:
Colour book is a project where stories are told in shape and colour in a formalised pictographical format. The pictographic language used is created by Bertha Lee and is expected to be used as how each audience person understands it. An interactive component allows viewers to take the symbols and arrange a phrase or gesture they want to communicate.
The project began as a criticism for the heirarchies around language and heirarchies around academia. Publication in concrete words meant legtimacy yet words are not understood the same way. The interactive component allows audience and viewer to experiment with meaning and reflect personal feelings. It also limits the viewers in the challenge to communicate allowing audience to negotiate between the rigidity of meaning and the flexibility of meaning.
