It's been Filed “Bored at Work”, Bertha Lee & Akush Bonsai, 2013
NXNE Art 2013, Hashtag Gallery, Toronto, ON. June 10-16, 2013.
Performance and Installation. Process Art. Two creative industry workers churn, work and work, bored and bored, a mundane day in the life of bored workers is recreated at Hashtag Gallery. Featuring an assemblage of deconstructed office and pencil pushing objects reconstructed to become the set of a pseudo office where performers Bertha Lee and Akush Bonsai get to work. Repetitive tasks in the durational performance sustains a slow stream of progress. Two desks made of cardboard, where one worker types nonsense words 9am to 5pm (with lunch break), another worker is mindlessly folding TTC transfers into paper cranes awaiting the seldom printout of text for copyediting. Immersing the space, walls of the “office” are lined with original artwork, the view the workers see from their desks they never leave: one wall hosts a painting constructed entirely out of eraser shavings spelling out the words “I’m so bored”, a projection of a mundane parking lot is on the feature wall of the gallery, another wall hosts a painting with a single sheet of paper covered in chaotic stream of conscious jargon. The environment and performance as a partially produced action of labour reflects the blurred lines of the creative process and its commodification.
